In recent years, especially in the United States, we have been witnesses to a disturbing trend - the rising number of cold calls and unsolicited telemarketing calls made to the home and business phones every day, even on weekends. As such, the number of complaints about these irritating and officious phone calls is also on the rise. Many of these calls come from phone companies, especially mobile phone providers but they are also for new windows, for insurance and for credit among other things.
If you had previously been rejected when applying for credit in the past, or have had a history of poor credit, it could be quite enticing if you suddenly get offered credit over the phone. However, there are some risks involved and you should be careful. The first, and most obvious risk you would be dealing with is the simple fact that since you are speaking to a person on another line, you cannot see him or her face-to-face. Just because someone says they are from a respectable bank or credit card provider does not necessarily mean they are, and you should accordingly be cautious about what information you give out over the phone. It would not be as parlous, however, if you had requested the call from a respected financial institution or if you are the one making the call.
If you feel that you should exercise maximum trepidation and not give out any piece of sensitive information or accept credit over the phone, then you have every right to reject the offer. However, if you see little harm in trying and believe that accepting a phone offer for credit doesn't seem like a bad idea, then give only the least possible amount of information. And that would mean giving out only your mailing address, but always ask if they have an application form they can send you, or one you can print off online and mail to them. Be on the lookout for any individual who calls you up asking for information such as your bank account number, payment information and other private details that might compromise your security. A bona fide financial institution of good reputation should not have any problems mailing you an application form or providing one that can be printed off the Internet and mailed back.
Also make it a point to ask the person for their complete name and the name of their company. Ask them for their website address so that you can look up the company on line. Also, when the application form does arrive by post, read it carefully and satisfy yourself not only that the offer is one you would like to accept, but also that the company is one that you would like to be dealing with. The last thing you should do is to analyze the fine print and make sure the address is legitimate so you can be sure of the company's legitimacy.
